PV Installed Capacity Surpasses Coal Power for the First Time; China’s New Energy Industry Enters a Brand-New Development Stage
China’s installed photovoltaic capacity has surpassed coal-fired power for the first time, making PV the largest power source.
According to the latest data released by the National Energy Administration, by the end of July 2026, China’s installed photovoltaic capacity reached 1.286 billion kW, including 704 million kW of centralized PV and 582 million kW of distributed PV. It has historically exceeded the installed capacity of coal-fired power (1.285 billion kW), becoming the power source with the largest installed capacity in China. Following the historic drop of coal-fired power generation share below 50% in the first half of 2026, this marks another milestone achievement in China’s green and low-carbon energy transition.
Globally, the 1.286 billion kW PV installed capacity ranks first among all single countries in the world, far exceeding that of the United States, India, Germany and other nations. It also surpasses the combined PV installed capacity of all EU member states, making China the world’s largest PV application market. From January to July 2026, national PV power generation hit 802.4 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 15.5%, accounting for 13% of the total social electricity consumption. That means one out of every eight kilowatt-hours consumed nationwide comes from photovoltaic power.
This milestone means the century-old pattern of coal-fired power being China’s largest power source in the power industry has been completely broken. New energy is accelerating its shift from supplementary energy to a major installed power source, and the construction of the new power system dominated by new energy is speeding up. Meanwhile, this achievement fully demonstrates the global competitiveness of China’s full PV industrial chain. The huge domestic market base further releases scale effects and drives continuous iteration and upgrading of PV technologies, providing solid support for achieving the “Dual Carbon” goals.
